Feeling better is more important than looking good

So, what do we get up in the morning and do exercise for?  Do you do it so you can look in the mirror and say to yourself, “wow, I look like a supermodel!”

If you do, then you are a special sort of person, because I don’t know many sort of people that do that… probably because not many of us are supermodels!

Most people, the first thing they say to me when they start with Vector Health is that they FEEL better. They tell me that as they walk out the door usually!  But… the first few weeks of a program, especially if you have never done a program or exercise before can be really intimidating.

I liken this to me, as someone who likes and does powerlifting for a sport, taking up ballroom dancing.  I would be absolutely petrified of looking like an idiot for probably weeks and weeks on end.  So, when I think of doing something like this, then I can put myself in the position of someone who comes to the gym with absolutely no idea of what, and how to do it.

So, my absolute most important aspect of what we do, and why we do it, is to make you feel better when you come to the gym for the first times ever.  I would rather hear the words, I feel better, than I look better especially in the first 6-8 weeks.  If you enjoy coming, if you want to get out of bed to come and exercise with your group, and we can help you form a habit that is so important, and can be life changing, then we, as professionals in our field have done something that is so much bigger than making you skinnier in 8 weeks and leaving you feeling like you have had to eat lettuce and run up hills just to make that happen.

The looks part of our industry is not quite what is cracked up to be.  Movie stars and supermodels look like they do, because it is their job to do so.  They have a lot of help behind the scenes and usually undertake unbelievable routines to maintain what they look like.  We, as mere “normal” people usually cannot afford the time and resources that they can.

So, focus on feeling better, NOT looking better.  The looking better does come, that I can promise you.  But if you do not feel better, you will not keep working on the rest.  No one keeps doing something they hate.  That is one of the most important things I learned as I made my way in this industry.

So, if you want to start exercising, or you know you need to, but are scared, then our Restart Program is for people like you.  Yes, you might want to lose weight as part of the process, but our program is about an exclusive, non-judgemental group who you can join in with and have a great experience to get you started.

Here is one of the stories from one of our original members in this program, Suzanne.

Suzanne’s story:

My girlfriend and I always have walked at least 5 km a day in the early hours of the morning.  She was lucky enough to be going on an eight week trek to the USA, not wanting to go this long without any form of exercise, I started asking co-workers what they did for exercise and where as a general conversation, one of my co-workers directed me to the Facebook post for Vector and the Restart your life, which she was about to start.  As my children already attend the Junior Athlete Program, I was excited to join.  Zac provided a one on one session to do the ‘scary bits’ (Weight, measurements and general movement).

A gentle approach was taken to our first week or so, allowing us to ‘get moving’ again and also training our mind set on the possibilities that we could run, squat, lift…  Assistance with Menu choices and advice was given, once tracking my food and getting over the ‘wow’ factor of some of my food choices (buy, buy Red Rooster Roll & chips). The only time consuming part of using the app was entering the recipes, but now it’s a breeze.

Goal setting was difficult to start with in the early stages, but breaking down to smaller goals became easier to achieve my ultimate goal – “Fit, Fabulous, before I was 50”.

I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of this program, yes, even the running.  My fitness levels are improving with every session, slowly getting flexibility back and I am feeling ‘Fabulous’, my skin and hair is even looking better because of the overall changes I have made.  Mentally and physically I am able to cope better with some of life’s challenges.  While I thought I was in ‘okay’ shape, I feel 1000 times better for being part of this program, I have and would recommend ‘Restart’ to anyone wishing to make significant changes or just to feel better about themselves.  At no time did I feel intimidated or judged by participants in the program or trainers, I only ever received encouragement.
