Why strong women are beautiful inside and out

Over the past 15 years I have been privileged to have coached some amazing women in all different sports and walks of life.  The one thing that resonates with me is that the stronger I helped them become, the more self-confident they become.

Being strong is a very personal definition. Some women I have coached are really happy when they can lift their own body weight in any description.  Their belief is that that is super strong and therefore their satisfaction and self-confidence is at an all time high!

Some other girls and women find that they just love the next personal best.  They look for what they can do next to feed the addiction that is pushing your body to do what others say should not be done.

Strong women come in all shapes, sizes and from different backgrounds.  That is the beauty of a strong woman.  They do not fit the fashion magazine “ideal” body types.  Instead they are real people, doing extraordinary things every day.  They look real, act real and are so much more beautiful for it.

So, if you are are a girl or woman and you love to get in the gym and push yourself, do not be afraid to set yourself lofty goals!

So, these are the 3 top reasons that I would recommend for women to do weight bearing training over running or other aerobic only exercise.

  1. Keeping your bone density and stopping onset of Osteopenia or Osteoporosis.   Low bone density is unfortunately something that women are more prone to as they grow closer to menopause.
  2. Strength Training has been demonstrated to be more effective as a weight loss or body composition change for women than simply just doing aerobic exercise.  A combination of both high intensity interval training with weight bearing exercises plus strength training has demonstrated excellent results across the past years.
  3. Strength training has been demonstrated to have a less injury rate than running when comparing the number of training hours to the number of injury hours across both disciplines.
