Lots of people will say that increasing your fluid intake especially water when engaged in a weight loss plan is a good idea.  But, do you know why?  Sometimes, if you are enabled with knowledge, it creates power, even if it means doing something that is uncomfortable, unusual or difficult.

Water and weight loss: 4 ways water helps you to lose weight

 

  1. Increases resting metabolic rate so you burn more fat

In one study participants drank water and increased their resting energy expenditure by 24% A similar study found drinking water increased energy expenditure by 25%!

  1. Causes reduction in overall calorie intake

In a study using two groups of participants one group drank 500 ml of water before each meal and the other did not. The group that drank water before their meals ate less calories and as a result over 12 weeks lost 44% more weight than the group that did not drink water.

A similar study found that drinking 500ml of water before breakfast reduced calorie intake by 13%

  1. Water replaces calories from sugary drinks

Studies have shown that those that drink more water consume on average 200 calories less than those that do not. This is because water has no calories and does not add to overall energy intake.

  1. Water fuels muscle growth

Muscle cells burn more energy at rest that fat cells. Muscles are around 80% comprised of water so staying hydrated is key to maintaining lean body mass.

How to drink water?

The Australian Family Physician journal, based on evidence gathered by the National Health and Medical Research Council, recommends drinking 500ml of water 30 minutes before each meal to achieve weight loss .
